Robert William Friend b. Sept. 9, 1839, Jefferson City, Missouri, d. March 19, 1918.
Son of Charles Fleming Friend and Martha Jane Barbour..one of four children. He spent his childhood in Bolivar, Missouri and served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War under General Sterling Price from 1861-1864; taken prisoner of war at Alton, Illinois.
Two brothers also enlisted in General Sterling Price’s army. Brother Edward Bent Friend, who later would manage the 300 acre estate near Helena, Phillips Co. Arkansas and Brother Daniel Vaughan Friend, who was killed at the Battle of Cowpens April 2, 1865.
After the war, he lived in Edwardsville, Illinois, Ottumwa, Iowa, in Missouri and was in Tennessee in 1868. He purchased property in Mississippi County, Arkansas; 4000 acres called “Pecan Point Plantation” and later purchased 3000 acres in Phillips County, Arkansas. It is said the 1000 people lived on his plantation.
He first married Nancy E. M. Payne of Bolivar, Missouri in October of 1859. They had three children. One, Virginia Brent Friend drowned in the sinking of a launch on the Mississippi River May 5, 1909. His grandfather died in the same unfortunate accident.
His second marriage was to Melissa Jane Carr, of Pecan Point, Arkansas on July 9, 1871. They had four children.
Robert William was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a Mason, IOOF, and was postmaster of Pecan Point, Arkansas for 20 years.
