Source: The History of Bedford and Somerset Counties by Blackburn and Welfley, published in 1906, Vol. 2, Chapter 4, very interesting.
Early settlers in Turkeyfoot region gleaned from the earliest assessment lists after Bedford Co. was formed, among those were: Andrew Friend, Augustine Friend and Charles Friend. The first assessment was made in the Fall of 1771. Capt. Andrew Friend had settled in Virginia ( Shenandoah ), reduced in circumstances, he went into eastern Pa. John and Joseph Friend, two brothers, went westward and settled in Colrain Twp., Cumberland ( now Bedford ) county, in a beautiful and fertile valley that is encompassed by mountains on three sides and is to this day known as Friend's Cove. Capt. Andrew Friend fought in the French and Indian War and is said to have commanded a company of rangers during the Revolutionary War. The wife of Capt. Andrew Friend was a sister of Captain Oliver Drake, one of the Jersey pioneers. They had three sons, Charles, Andrew Jr. and Elijah Friend and seven daughters, Sarah ( Friend ) Abrahams, Jemina ( Friend ) Abraham, Rebecca ( Friend ) Ogg, Rachel (Friend ) Ogg, Susannah ( Friend ) Hyatt, and Diana ( Friend ) Mitchell. John Mitchell, s/o James Mitchell, Rev. War Vet., and husband of Diana Friend, d/o Capt. Andrew Friend. Born to the union of John Mitchell and Diana Friend, were Levi, James, Andrew, Joseph, John, Jesse and Hiram Mitchell, Elizabeth ( Mitchell ) Darrell, Diana ( Mitchell ) Ross, Mary ( Mitchell ) Thayer and Cynthia ( Mitchell ) Ross. The death of Capt. Andrew Friend is unknown, but his farm was sold after his death to David Ankeny in 1793.
