The Friend Family Cabin
Taken from John S. Friend Family and Comanche Indians-John Friend Eckel, El Dorado Kansas

The cabin was originally built by two Indian somen. The Friend cabin as it appeared in 1971 before it was removed by the El Dorado Historical Society. Upper photo shows the front or south side and lower shows the rear side. From 1868 until 1894, this was the home of the John Friend family. It was in this cabin that Kate Viola Friend, mother of John Friend Eckel was born.
After living in the cabin for several years, John Friend built a house about 75 feet to the south. It was a good, comfortable six room house. It was in this house that Kate Viola Friend was married to William M. Eckel, the parents of John Friend Eckel and two sisters, Alice Catherine and Julia Dorothy.

active on the frontier of Texas and Kansas was Methodist Minister and Circuit Rider. Instrumental in the organization of the United Methodist Church in El Dorado, Kansas and served as its first pastor. As a member fo the Kansas legislature helped get the Missouri Pacific Railroad through El Dorado. He was forced to choose between giving up his Canadian citizenship or resigning from the legislature. He chose the latter. Leonard was the father of John Scratch Friend.

John Friend was a stock raiser in Llano County, Texes until October 1868 when he drove a herd of cattle north on the Chisholm Trail to El Dorado, Kansas. There, he settled on a farm where he lived most of the rest of his life.
Matilda Jane Jones Friend was shot with an arrow and scalped by Comanche Indians February 5, 1868 . She recovered and raised six children, all girls. The first, Belle Jane Friend, was born 24 days (February 29, 1868) after she was scalped. Her head and face wounds were in such a condition that she did not see her baby daugher until she was more than seven weeks old.
The other girls, Rebecca Lee, Kate Viola, Alice Matilda, Nancy Gertrude, and Carrie Emma Friend, all born in Kansas wher the Friend cabin was located.
The following diagram, furnished by Dr. Johnie Lee Reeves shows how Matilda Jane Jones Friend and her descendants fit into the Reeves family.
