I don't have an answer for that Annette, I was working from census records from Heritage Quest and they only go back to 1860 for Ohio. In 1860 they list 100 Friend names in Ohio.

Looking over all i have i think that is had to be about 1786 when Barbara Grubaugh of Richland county ohio ( which is next door to Ashland county) married George Friend Jr. as i know the Grubaugh family were living in Richland at that time. Then they must have moved to Ashland county, Ohio after that time. Not sure where George Friend was living. I will keep searching.

Annette, The researcher I am trying to help (Richard Friend of IN) only sent me his direct line from Philip.
Richard reports that Philip was born 1718, he lived in Elizabeth 100 (Frederick County, Maryland) and many of his children were born there. In 1771 Philip and his wife were sponsors to a baptism in the "German Reformed Church of America" in (today's) Hagerstown, MD.
Richard said: "they then moved to Washington County PA along with most of the family. Philip died there and is buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery east of the city of Washington, PA.
George Sr., married and later too (sic) residence in Ashland area. George Jr. was born there and so the movement westward until it came to Indian where there is quite an amount of Friends in the area."
Richard has spent years trying to connect Philip to the family of Nils Friend but was later told of the German line. He says in the baptismal records the name is spelled FREUND.
Richard doesn't use a computer but he is nearing 80 and wishes to find the answers to his family line. Maybe you would like to write to him? I can give you his mailing address.

Annette, Genealogy is a very personal thing. I am not here to say anyone is 100% right or 100% wrong and I feel we all have the right to believe what we wish about our family lines.
There are many that believe Nils Friend is Swedish but yet there are those who swear he was English. I have no intentions of trying to change anyone's opinion.
I try to help researchers by posting information I have in my files or from census records I find on-line. People submit their genealogy records according to their own beliefs but we all "should" use them as guidelines and then find documentation (prove our own line).
I can't say IF Philip is from the line of Nils or IF he was German. I can only help by giving information that I have.
I hope I can help you find your roots and I hope if you find them then you will share the information with us and others.
The Friend Family Association's membership provides this message board for the exchange and sharing of genealogy and encourages everyone to do so.
