Yesterday I stopped by the Washington County Court House.
Washington County was formed in 1776 form Frederick County.
It was made of present day Allegany, Garrett & Washington Counties.
This is the first deed (June 1778) recorded for a Friend in Washington
County, Maryland. "Jack's Bottom" is about 1 to 2 mile Due West of
present day Williamsport, MD.
I believe this was Jacob Friend (1738 to 1802) son of Charles Friend
(1693 to 1750/51) and grandson of Andrew FRIEND (1659 to 1748).

At the request of Jacob Friend the following deed was recorded June 9th, 1778.
This indenture made the 9th day of June in the year of our Lord 1778
between Jeremiah Jack of Washington County and State of Maryland
farmer of the one part and Jacob Friend of said county and state farmer
of the other part.
Witnesseth that the said Jeremiah Jack for and in consideration of the sum
of five hundred and sixty eight pounds, thirteen shillings and six current
money of the state aforesaid to him in hand paid by the said Jacob Friend
before the on sealing and delivery of those presents the receipt and delivery
whereof the said Jeremiah Jack doth hereby acknowledge and thereof and
there from doth exonerate and acquit the said Jacob Friend his heirs and
assigns forever by those presents hath given, granted, bargained, sold, aliened,
conferred, confirmed and made give and by those presents doth give, grant
and bargain unto him the said Jacob Friend, his heirs and assigns forever
all that part of a tract or parcel of Land called "Jack's Bottom" lying and
being in the county aforesaid:
Beginning at the end of two hundred and forty two perches in the (original ?)
line of said land reversed then with the said line and out lines of said land
reversed S 86 degrees E 130 perches, S 50 degrees W 92 perches,
N 88 degrees E 74 perches, S 8 perches, S 891/2 perches W 4 (?) perches,
S 81 1/2 degrees W 44 perches, W 20 perches S 88 degrees 20 perches,
N 84 1/2 degrees W 3 perches then with a straight line to the beginning
containing 43 acres of land more or less with their and every of their
rights, monitors and appurtenances, whatsoever the reversion and
renovations, remainder and remainders of all and singular the said lands.
Covenants and promises hereby granted and of every part and parcel
thereof and all rents assigns and services and profits to them or any
them and out or appertaining and all and every, the estate and estate
rights, titles, claims and domains whatsoever of him the said Jeremiah
Jack unto or out of the said land. Covenants and promises and every
part and parcel thereof and all and every the lands, charters, writings
and (?) unto whatsoever touching or concerning the said land. Covenants,
(?) and promise whatsoever hereby granted or any of them or any part
or parcel there of:
To have and to hold the said lands, covenants and all other their promises
hereby granted, bargained and sold or mentioned or interested to be
granted, bargained and sold and every part and parcel thereof with
their and every of their appurtenances unto the said Jacob Friend, his
heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use and behoof of him the
said Jacob Friend, his heirs and assigns forever and the said Jeremiah
Jack and his heirs the land, covenants and promises hereby granted or
wanted to be granted and every part and parcel there of with all and
singular, their and way of their rights, members unto him the said Jacob
Friend, his heirs and assigns against him the said Jeremiah Jack and his
heirs and all and every other person or persons whatsoever claiming any
thing in the said land and promises shall and will warrant and forever
defend by those presents.
In witness whereof the said Jeremiah Jack hath here unto set his hand
and seal this day and year first above written.

Jeremiah Jack before us two of the Justices of the Peace foresaid
county and acknowledged the written deed to be his act and deed
and the land and promises therein conveyed to be the right and
estate of the written named Jacob Friend his heirs and assigns forever
according to an act of assembly in such cases made and at the same
time came Martha, wife of Jeremiah Jack and being by us privately
examined, declared that she freely and voluntarily relinquished her
right of Dower to the within mentioned land and promises without
being induced thereto this fear or threat of her said husband or fear
of his displeasure and the same to be the right and estate of the
written named Jacob Friend, his heirs and assigns forever.
