Internet posting: 1. George Henry Friend, 1774, Somerset Co., Pa. marr 1797, Pa., Mary Magdalena Knable, d/o Jacob Knable & Marie Salome Cassel. marr 18 June 1805, Jefferson Co., Ohio, Barbara Greubach (1786-1852) CH: John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jacob, Mary Ellen, Susanna, Michael, George, Christopher, Philip.
I list George, (above) husband of Mary Knable, as the son of Andrew Friend and Elizabeth Peregan (various spellings). Children: Jacob, Catherine, John and George Henry Friend.
I think George Friend/Freund did married Barbara Grubaugh in 1805 but that he was the son of George Friend/Freund 1751-1825 and Catherine Zook/Zug (This George was born at Elizabeth 100, Maryland (now the Hagerstown area) and his father was Philip Friend/Freund 1718-1801, mother: Anna Catherine Harsh/Hearsh 1726-1797.
Children of George and Barbara: John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jacob, Mary, Susanna, Michael, George Henry, Christopher, and Philip.
Does anyone have information about George Friend b. 1774 marrying twice? Or are these two different George Friends? Did Andrew Friend have a son named George?

Annette, If you have the information for Barbara Grubaugh and her other husbands and children go ahead and post them. The more information we have the better to make connections.

John 1806 Elizabeth 1807 Sarah 1809 Jacob 1811 Mary Ellen 1814 (Richard Friend, IN, calls her Mary (Polly) – is this the Mary Ellen that married the Mr. Carpenter? Susan 1816 (Richard Friend, IN, calls her Susanna) Michael 1819 (Richard Friend, IN, Michael is his direct line) George 1821 (Richard Friend, IN, calls him George Henry) Christopher 1826 Phillip 1828

yes from what i found and seen on her tombstone .. Mary Ellen friend carpenter is the same one as Polly. Remember they changed names and folks could not spell. I have seen my husband great grandmother's name spelled so many different times..
So Mary Ellen Friend Carpenter and Polly Friend Carpenter are the same folks..

Annette, Thanks, that helps. I am going to set up a Family Tree Maker file for Philip Friend and hopefully I will be able to keep these people straight. Right now I am working from a paper file and it is just too confusing for me to match up people with the correct parents.

Annette, Family Tree Maker is a software program you put on your computer. You enter information for yourself, then your parents, then grandparents, etc. and start building your family tree.
When I get it set up I can post a "Genealogy Report" on this site and let people make additions and/or corrections.

Annette, I don't have your line. You are following the line for Philip and I have no entries in my Family Tree Maker (FTM) for this line. I only have names that follow the line of Nils Larsson Friend out of NJ in the 1600's

Barbara (Grubaugh) Friend's second husband appears in the 1850 Census of Jackson Township, Dekalb County, IN:
Robert Ellison...........70...male.......farmer...born in MD Barbara Ellison.........64...female..................born in PA Christopher Friend...24...male.......laborer...born in OH Philip Friend.............22....male......laborer.....born in OH
Christoper and Philip appear in the 1860 Census, but Robert and Barbara do not.

I am very new at this and am just in the process of reviewing the years of geneology research that my mother, Helen McConnell Hughes, did. I am showing from her files.... George Friend married Barbara Gurbaugh and had the 10 children that are mentioned. George Friend's parents were George Friend born in 1752 Somerset, PA and Catherine "Caty" Sook George Sr's parents were Phillip Friend, born 1718 in Penn and died in 1801 and "Ann" Elizabeth Harsh Philip's parents were Andrew Friend, born 1660 in Weymouth, England and Isobella Andrew's parents were Nicholas Friend, Jr, born 1616 in Weymouth, England, and Anna, born 1618 and died 1724. She was 106 years old and was buried at St. Paul's Cemetary in Chester, Penn. Nicholas Friend Jr and Anna were married in 1701 Nicholas Jr., parents were Nicholas, Sr born in 1568 in Glochestershire, England and died in 8-18-1638. He married Anna Scott in 1654. We are also showing that Nicholas Sr. was a yeoman and Nicholas and Anna only had 1 son, Nicholas, Jr. who was born in Thornley, Province of Gouchestershire, England in 1616 and was a sea captain. Can anyone verify that they have the same info as this? Would this mean that Nicholas, Sr's parent would be John Friend, Sr?

Patti, I received a letter yesterday and was told that there is a "substantial paperback" selling for about $40 and it is about the National Road. As I understand it; there is a brief mention in this book about George Friend who was, for a short time, inn keeper/owner of a famous Inn on the "Old Nat'l Road" in Somerset Co. PA. I wondered if this might not be about the George Friend who married Cathy Zook? Sadly, the author of the letter did not give me the exact title. Does anyone know what the name of this book is?
