THE FRIEND FAMILY OF WEST BETHEHEM TOWNSHIP WASHINGTON COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA

The earliest record of the Friend (Freundt) family is in 1771 when Philip Friend and his wife, Elizabeth, were sponsors at the baptism February 14 of Christopher, son of Christopher and Margaret Zed**er (Zurcher) at Zion
Reformed Church, Hagerstown, Maryland. The next listing is in the 1776 census where Philip -. Friend and family are listed in Elizabeth Hundred, now Washington County, Maryland, Even their ages are given.
On November 2, 1778, son, Tobias, married in Washington County, Maryland, to Margaret, daughter of Simon Harsh. On March 27, 1780, Philip Friend sold his Maryland land to Jacob Klein and moved to Washing ton County, Pennsylvania, On November 2, 1781, Philip's sons, George, Tobias, and Philip, Jr., were privates in the militia under Captain George Myers, The Friend, Zed**er, and Harsh families all moved from Maryland to West Bethlehem Township, So did the Knestrick family.
In 1783 the tax list shows: Philip Friend Sr., 375 acres, 4 horses, 4 cows; Tobias 1 h, 1 c; George 2 h, 2 c; Philip Jr., single freeman. Christopher was 19, too young to be listed. In 1796 it is: Philip Sr. and Jr., 360 acres, 1 h, 1 c, 2 oxen, shingled house, cabin barn, 3 cabins, sawmill, stillhouse; Tobias 100 a, 1 h, 1 c, shingled house, cabin
barn, 2 cabins; George 100 a, 2 h, 2 c, cabin, cabin barn; Christopher 3 cows.
Philip Sr.'s will, written April 3, probated May 5, 1801, names his children.
HARSH NOTE: Margaret Harsh (wife of Tobias Friend) 1757-1829 was daughter of Simon (son of Henry) Harsh 1722-1807. Simon landed at Philadelphia September 27, 1740.
